Wookies Love Oranges Lunch Bag - 2011

I chose to draw Chewbacca one night, and then as I was drawing his muzzle, the shape of it made me think of when we stuff an orange in our mouths and then smile. It's a fun breakfast-time endeavor. And that became the joke, "Wookies Love Oranges."

... and sandwiches.

Death Star vs. Starbucks Logo Lunch Bag - 2011

Sometimes we use whatever paper bags are available, and these Starbucks bags are perfect. I had been thinking of using the logo as a planet, and when I sat down to make the lunch bag I thought of the Death Star. Then I drew two word balloons and using my big-ass black magic marker I blacked it all in. This was supposed to have simplified things for me by restricting myself to two lines of dialogue. It hand-cuffed me. And I was stuck trying to figure out who was talking and what they were saying. I left it blank till the next morning and in a mad dash before my kid left for camp I wrote the silly dialogue between Governor Tarkin and Darth Vader, based on a true story, though the names were changed... ...And nobody blew up the Starbucks logo.

Ahsoka Tano (the hated lunch bag) - 2011

 

My son took one look at this lunch bag, the first week of camp, and his face contorted as if I'd told him to clean out the cat-box. Then he said: "Why'd you draw her?"

As it ended up, he was embarrassed to take this lunch bag to camp because it had a girl character on it. I had figured, she's from Clone Wars. She's a Jedi! It'll be cool! I went out of my way to draw her looking tough and mean so there'd be no question, this was not a girlie "Barbie" drawing. Then I thought I'd make a sandwich joke out of her name, too, "Tona Sandwich", like "Tuna sandwich".. Ha ha ha- .......

Bottom line, he hated it.  Daddy Failed. Then he "Force" choked me.

LEGO Clone Hijinks Lunch Bag - 2011

Don't know where this idea came from, but it popped into my head and I drew it. The LEGO guys are always fun to mess around with. I wasn't sure if the idea was going to read, but it made a four year-old laugh and he couldn't even read the dialogue. So, I guess it worked well enough.

The Empire gets hungry Lunch Bag - 2011

The silliness continues aboard the Tantive IV, Princess Leia's starship from the opening moments of "Star Wars".  I've been reading the "Making of Star Wars" book, which is fantastic, btw, and this scene got stuck in my head. And thus, it evolved into this lunch bag.

LEGO "Barf" Trooper Lunch Bag -2011

I was kidding around with the boys one day, after having done a "Barc Trooper" and an "Arf Trooper" lunch bags and I made this "What if..." joke.  And they kept rolling with it. Barf jokes, they love 'em! A day or so later, it was requested I draw it up. Gross, but at least it was LEGO Troopers.

IG-8-Yer-Lunch Lunch Bag - 2011

I think I was looking for something other than Clones to draw so I thought of this guy: the predecessor to Bounty Hunter, IG-88. Turns out, he was pretty fun to draw. I did flourish it with some silver Prisma Color, 'cause I could. Though, I did have to explain to the kids that he's talking in a droid language, but that the word 'sandwich' has been translated for us.  They got it... I think. What's the droid really saying about sandwiches?.... One wonders.
