Star Wars Lunch Bag: A description

Star Wars Lunch Bag: A description

Star Wars lunch bags were something I started for my eldest son when he began Summer Camp in 2009. It was something special that I could do for him each day. It also acted as an ice-breaker, a conversation piece between my son, the camp staff and the other campers. Now, I've got two boys in camp, so it's double the quota. Each night I draw up pictures, usually something "Star Wars-y" on the next day's lunch bags. It can be any thing: a ship, a character, a mash-up, or whatever ( I do take requests.) It's something fun for them to discover each morning. And, it's a reminder of me, their Dad, when they are off having fun at camp.
In years past, most of the bags were kept by the camp staff. But, so far this year, the boys have been bringing them home to keep for themselves.

Some of the bags turn out fairly decent. And others, perhaps, not as successful or artistically satisfying. But, in the end, it's all for fun - theirs... and mine.

Star Wars Stick People Lunch Bag (luke, droids) - 2011

This is my new favorite. I wanted to draw Star Wars in a different style, to mix it up and keep it interesting and fun for myself (and maybe for the kids, too). So, I started doodling these stick people. First it was Han and Chewie. Han was completely a stick-man, no real body. Chewie brought in more defined head and body shapes and then I started playing around with Luke and the Droids and this is where it ended up - not completely sticks, and not completely dimensional. Since I used dialogue from the film, I felt I had to make Princess Leia say something silly, and "Wobbly Kenobbly" is what came out. I also broke down and used some Prismacolor pencil crayons to increase my available color palate.

LEGO Star Wars "Tough Talkin' Droid" Lunch Bag - 2011

LEGO Tough Talkin' Droid (Front)
(Back)
The day after I did the first two-parter requested by my son, he then asked for the opposite, where a droid is now surrounded by Clone Troopers. I told him this time I had to put a limit on how many characters I'd draw. We worked out the premise over dinner, and then after he was in bed I got about drawing it up and making up the dialogue. I enjoyed making one of the little Clones do as he was told and throw down his weapon to the dismay of his fellow Clones.

A two-parter!  The Front
The Back
Wes asked for this two part lunch bag: A Lego Clone on the front surrounded by thousands of Lego Battle Droids. On the back, he's destroyed them all. I did what I could on the front to simulate the "Thousands" of droids, request. By the time I got to the back I had already invested a chunk of time, so I had to cheat the rest - Cut it back to one character with what could be smudge marks where the Droids had once been. Avoid drawing thousands of broken droid pieces. It worked well enough.

Yoda Interrupted Lunch Bag - 2011

For those who know... YES, I wrote the quote wrong. It should read "For my ally is the Force..." I was rushing. It was late. Once written in Sharpie, there's no going back. Besides that, the reason Grover is interrupting Yoda is an inside joke,  again, for those who know. For those who don't, Yoda and Grover are both voiced and puppeteered by Frank Oz. He's awesome! It came to me, and I thought it would be kind of funny.  The boys just thought it was funny that Grover was there.

Jar-Jar ate my lunch Lunch Bag - 2011

Adults universally hate him, but the kids love this character. Damn you, Jar-Jar! I was in a hurry this night, and had to come up with an idea for a drawing fast, keeping it to just a head, and in record time write the jokey dialogue. As expected, the kids loved it. Success!

LEGO Anikin - Red Clone Helmet - 2011

Here's another request from my son: The Lego Anikin from the "Star Wars Lego: Quest for R2-D2" game. One of the cheat-codes you could use in the game gave your character a Red Clone helmet. And this is the one he wanted. White correction tape for the vibrant white of the light saber (a new trick I've added.)

Clone Commander Colt Lunch Bag - 2011

This Commander Colt lunch bag was my apology drawing for doing an Ahsoka Tano lunch bag, which my son apparently was embarrassed to take to camp. I even made her look angry,  so it wasn't even a cutesy, girly drawing.  Didn't matter, it was still a drawing of a girl character. So, he requested a cool Clone Trooper for the next day's drawing and I chose Commander Colt. It was a good choice. Daddy was back in the good books.

BARC Trooper Lunch Bag - 2011

I had a nice toy package image of this BARC Trooper, and did my best to translate it onto the paper bag with my palate of Sharpie colors. I liked the composition of this one. My son thought it was cool. I think the camp director kept it and put it on his office wall.

Mandalorian Lunch Bag - 2011

Sandwich joke - always a winner! This was a pretty good one I adapted from a reference picture. Using the Colored Sharpy collection and Crayola Pencil Crayons.

Commando Droid Lunch Bag - 2011

There's the "sandwich" joke. For most of these, I limited myself to using my collection of multi-colored Sharpy markers, Wes's Crayola Erasable pencil crayons, my big-ass black marker and my favorite pen,  Black Uni-Ball Vision (love 'em!).

First lunch bag of the Summer 2011: DARTH VADER

On this day we had a red lunch bag as a canvas. So I did what I could with it, a Sharpy, and a big-ass black magic marker.  I tried not to spend too much time on it, as it was disposable. So, I kept it pretty loose.  The "Sandwich" gag continued on from last summer.

ARF Trooper on his mount Lunch Bag

He wanted an ARF Trooper so that's what he got. Good thing he had the little action figure and walker I could use for reference. Forgot to mention the lunch bags usually contain the word "sandwich" in the dialogue. A running gag from last year. I've slipped up a couple times this summer and done without it.
