Camp-Bus Trench Run 'split-bag' Mural - Day 30 - Last day of camp 2013!

 

The last day of camp!!! I've made it a habit to make the last bag of the summer as a keeper for the head counselor. It usually involves a caricature of the counselors and maybe something to do with camp life, and the camp vans. This year, since I had to do two of bags, I thought it would be fun to do this split-bag mural. The two connect to make one cool image but are still separate all-in-one comic panels when apart. I came up with the idea earlier in the day and did a couple doodles of it. I liked how the finished bags turned out. I hope the counselors liked 'em, too!

Clone trooper Birthday Bag + The Comb Wars - Day 29 - 2013

 

On this day it was one of the boys junior counselor's birthday. So I made the Clone Trooper bag to be given to him like a Birthday card. Which is why there's a guy reflected in the trooper's eye lens - it's Conor the j.c..

Following in my bizarro-mode, I came up with "The Comb Wars" idea for the other bag. It got a laugh or two. Possibly a chuckle.

Luke Pancake + 501st Phone Trooper - Day 28 - 2013

 

Okay, nobody gets my bizarro Luke Pancake bag. And I mean, nobody. I just thought the boys, especially the younger one, would find it funny 'cause it was a pancake speaking the words of Luke Skywalker. The butter is gone, there's an empty jug of syrup, a plate of crumbs and something burning in the toaster - There's nothing left for him there now. Amazingly, the little guy really, really loved... even if he didn't get what the joke was.

They both loved the 501st Phone Trooper. It was fun to draw. It might actually work too.



 

Cave Troll + LEGO Jek 14 - Day 26 - 2013

One boy, the youngest, asked for a Cave Troll, I assumed from Lord of the Rings, but he may have meant from "Harry Potter". Regardless, I did the one I thought he meant and he thought it was pretty funny. For the other bag I chose a new LEGO Star Wars character from the "Yoda Chronicles" - Jek-14. My oldest boy had just bought this new LEGO set at Comic-Con and couldn't wait to build it.

Turbo on 3PO's head and three others - Days 23, 24 and 25 - 2013

I was inspired after doing the "Turbo on top of RD-D2" bag, and decided I'd do a whole series of Turbo on top of different Star Wars helmets. I did all four the night before leaving for Comic-Con, since the little guy would need one for each of the two days we were gone and then I'd need bags for both boys for Friday - knowing I would be exhausted the Thursday night after walking the Con and driving back from San Diego. The only reference I had for Turbo was "The Art of Book", forgetting of course, there was a story book in the kids' room and Google images at my fingertips. Lots of images that would have come in handy when drawing Turbo. But, I managed well enough without.

Turbo and R2 + Turbo - Day 22 - 2013

Dreamwork's "Turbo" was opening this week, the same week my son and I were going to the San Diego Comi-Con. So, to please the kids I thought I'd do a little tribute to "Turbo" - one non-Star Wars bag for the little guy, and a Star Wars/Turbo mash-up for his older brother. It was fun drawing a cartoon character, and, I'll admit, a little faster and easier. It's a really cute snail design, too.

LEGO AT-AT driver + LEGO Commander Fox - Day 21 - 2013

I was in a real hurry this night and needed something different from the other days so I went with LEGO Star Wars. When I'm in a hurry, I try to stick to just doing character heads. A little less to draw. Then I get to sleep.

Comic-Con ARF Trooper + Blubber Fatt 2 - Day 20 -2013

 

This day's bags were both requests. My oldest suggested a Clone Trooper buying his own action figure at Comic-Con and my youngest wanted his own Garfield "Blubber Fatt" bag like I had done for his older brother in the first week of camp. I hadn't drawn an ARF trooper this year, so I went with that. My first sketch had the trooper more in profile, asking a cute "Slave Leia" who was working the booth how much the action figure was. But, to cut down on the drawing time, I eliminated the girl idea. For Blubber Fatt, I had to make it different than the first one, so I chose this time to have Garfield lifting the helmet up so we could actually see his face. Both boys happy!

 

 

Jawa Sandwich Crawler + 212th Clone Trooper - Day 18 - 2013

 

The Jawa Sandwich Crawler treks across the barren wastes of Tatooine, selling all manor of sandwiches, and other tasty treats. I thought my littlest would find the idea funny, but after I finished it I my had doubts. Luckily he came running in the next morning telling me how much he loved it. For the other bag, I was in the mood to draw my stylized version of a Clone Trooper. It became a 212th once I chose his colors - my favorite Orangey-yellow.

 

Vadery + Imperial Probe Droid - Day 17 - 2013

 

Drew a cartoony Vader for my youngest and this Probe Droid silhouette for my older guy. I chose not to do the cool blue colors of Hoth for some reason that made sense at the time. I had this idea to do a series of Probe Droid silhouette bags, but let that idea fall by the wayside for time-being. Maybe another year?

 

 

 

CARS WARS Snowspeeder + Garfield and the Emperor - Day 16 - 2013

 

I had wanted to attempt a "CARS WARS" Snowspeeder for some time, so I gave it a shot. My older son requested a "Garfield" with a "Star Wars" joke. So, somehow I came up with this idea of Emperor Palpatine playing with Garfield. It may be a toy, or, it may be an alien creature that Palpatine is using to entice Garfield with. I let the viewer decide.

Darth Vader Split-Screen 2 - Day 15 - 2013

 

Another Darth Vader split-screen. The idea came to me while waiting for my niece's basketball game to start. One side I wanted Vader's face visible, but younger than in "Return of the Jedi" and then the other side the x-ray flash that happened when Vader tossed ol' Palpatine down that shaft in "Jedi". The x-ray bag is one of the only ones I ever redid - I made a major mistake with my giant black magic marker that I couldn't recover from. It was a difficult choice, and it kept me up really late, 'cause it was already very late at night when I started. The jokes? Well... they're okay, I suppose.

 



Dengar + CARS WARS Scout Walker - Day 14 - 2013

 

I doodled this Dengar in my sketchbook a couple days before I actually used him for this lunch bag. A little shout out to "Swampy" from the "Where's My Water?" app there on Dengar's lunchbox. And then, I made an attempt at another of my "CARS WARS" Star Wars ships: The Scout Walker about to get crushed, like in "Return of the Jedi." This became my wife's new favorite. Both of these are two of my favorites too. A successful night of lunch bag drawing that night.

 

Boba Fett Confessional + Garnac's Fav' Sandwich - Day 13 - 2013

 

My youngest requested the leader of this "Bossk-like" group of hunters he had seen in the Clone Wars TV series. I had to search for the episode online to figure out what this guys name was so I could find some reference to draw him. His name is Garnac. He and Bossk are "Trandoshan" by the way. With that done, I made up another Cartoony Boba Fett, with a sandwich joke that referenced earlier lunch bags.

4th of July - Storumtrooper + Speedy Luke and his Landspeeder - Day 12 - 2013

This time a suggestion came from my wife to include the America Flag into the lunch bag drawing.
I thought of this cartoony Stormtrooper with flag, and Luke trailing a flag behind his landspeeder. My wife really liked the patriotic Stormtrooper. Naturally, I would have preferred Ben's dialogue to say "I'm getting too old for this shit!", but I had to keep it clean. You know... for the kids.

Bossk + 4-LOM - Day 11 - 2013

 

I decided to do a couple Bounty Hunters from "Empire" - Bossk and 4-LOM. I wish there was more time to practice drawing these guys, but it just has to get done, for better or worse. I was pleased that Bossk looks like Bossk, but 4-LOM could have used a little more practice time - not one of better ones. Once again, the boys didn't care, they liked 'em anyway.

Cars Wars Imperial Shuttle + Garfield the Hutt - Day 10 2013

Continuing on my Star Wars ships in the "Cars" style I took a stab next at the Imperial Shuttle with maybe a little more success. And with the requested Garfield I came up with this weird leg-less one: "Garfield the Hutt."

Wookie Brain-Freeze + Garfield Chewie Costume - Day 9 2013

A request was made for another Garfield and I told the boys I'm drawing Chewbacca tonight, as the theme. Me and the little guy came up with the Brain-Freeze gag and the Garfield Comic-Con gag came up when I decided to have the dog Odie copy Garfield and dress up like Chewbacca too. Semi-successful on that one. I was happy with the Odie, though.
